Malacca Roadtrip: Every Other Piece of Beauty

Jonker Street was one of the first places we visited. This particular street name will be rattling off the mouths of whoever's visited Malacca as it is not only the home of the awesome chicken rice balls shop, it also houses a streetful of other shops selling clothes, trinkets and interesting items. Walking from one end to the other under the hot afternoon sun certainly proved to be a challenge but why waste the opportunity? On my part, I did not intend to do any shopping whatsoever. Thus, I only bought a cute little Rubik Cube for like, two bucks? The girls seemed to enjoy themselves though as they went in and out of shops selling hats, shoes, clothes and accesories. Alas, we discovered that a lot of the items in the shops were overpriced as the area was becoming more and more commercialized. However, there were some that did offer good deals. Nevertheless, enjoy these pictures!

We also visited the regular tourist spots in Malacca - The Stadhuys Building (not sure if that's spelled correctly), The old Christ Church of Malacca, A'Famosa and the ruins around it. For all its worth, this old aunty who sells vegetables proved to be the most interesting catch.

She jovially posed for my camera and afterwards told me that many people like taking pictures of her and her cart but she never got any of it. Giving me her address, she asked me to mail her this picture, which I gladly did. I'm still waiting to hear if she got it, though. Speaking of ruins, there really wasn't much to see. You would have already seen the pictures of the ruins in the earlier posts (for Melodie, Joanne and Shah) but aside from this ladder...

... and a couple of stone tablets, there weren't many interesting things at all. The Malacca River maybe? Hmmm.

A colourful reminder that this particular restaurant doesn't appreciate payment AFTER you've enjoyed your food. Or maybe they're just too lazy to ensure that you don't run away without paying. One thing we did notice is the whole place was full of colourful trishaws. The riders seem to take pride in their little bicycle carriages and at times go to great lengths to decorate the vehicle. Not sure if they charge more if their ride looks better than another.

The highlight was certainly the Eye on Malaysia, the big Ferris wheel that used to be in Titiwangsa Park in KL. Last I heard, the owners have been told to clear our of Malacca because they haven't been paying the site rent. Quite a shame, because it's really beautiful. I think the Eye deserves more visitors, there really is a hell lot that can be seen from up there. Perhaps its just poorly located.

Last but certainly not least, the spectacular view we got while enjoying our seafood as the sun set behind us. Truly a sight to behold.
